The Ninth Stage (Spontaneous Placement)

The sixth bend has been passed — the power of skill, meaning that the skill has been fully developed. It is no longer necessary to make an effort to enter meditation; this happens spontaneously, smoothly, and naturally. At this stage, complete shamatha is attained — the total absence of distractions against a background of ultimate clarity of consciousness, lasting for at least three hours (a quarter of a day, meaning the daytime rather than a full twenty-four-hour period: 12/4=3).
The elephant is sleeping, and the monk is meditating in a cave (in seclusion). Balanced concentration is the final stretch before attaining the first dhyana (jhana). At this stage, no matter which posture you enter meditation in, it will be accompanied by bliss rather than pain and bodily fatigue. This means that you can meditate for a very long time without changing your posture (even in padmasana). Yes, this ability is attained through the development of consciousness rather than through work with the body, although work with the body is also necessary at the initial stages (opening the hips and so on).
And only now does it become possible to enter a genuine retreat. Talk of long retreats lasting many years is ridiculous when it comes from people who have not yet said goodbye to their monkey, because prolonged stillness in such a person only causes psychosomatic tension to accumulate: the monkey thrashes about inside them, and this is not meditation but merely tense sitting within their own thoughts... But now a person can enter retreat, because «renunciation» of the world has already taken place. It did not happen in the cave, but before it, when the person released their monkey...
